Different membranes fail differently. TPO and PVC single-ply roofs fail almost exclusively at seams - heat-welded seams that were never fully fused, or aged seams that have opened over time - and at mechanical penetrations. Modified bitumen and built-up roofs fail at flashing details, at ponding-related blistering, and at the transition from the field to the parapet or curb. Elastomeric and silicone coating systems fail when the coating has thinned to the point that the substrate is doing the work.

A correct flat roof repair identifies which failure mode is in front of us and uses the right method for it: hot-air weld, cold-applied patch, target-primer-and-patch, or full recoating of a defined area. The correct repair procedure uses a matching-thickness TPO patch, a hot-air welder at the correct temperature, and a probe test on the finished seam to verify a continuous weld. Skipping any of those steps produces a patch that looks acceptable and leaks the first time water sits on it.
